A whimsical dessert that captures the spirit of a carnival with every slice.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Cotton candy for decoration
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Crack the eggs into the butter-sugar blend one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl.
  6. Alternate adding the dry mixture with the milk to the wet ingredients, mixing gently.
  7. If desired, divide the batter and add food coloring to create colorful layers.
  8. Pour the batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool the cakes in the pans completely, then transfer them to a wire rack.
  10. Assemble the cake by layering with frosting and decorating with cotton candy.
  11. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Use parchment paper for easier release from pans.
