A rich, moist chocolate cake perfect for celebrating love on Valentine’s Day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until well combined.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
  4. Carefully stir in boiling water and optional red food coloring.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Let cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frost with buttercream frosting and sprinkle with heart-shaped decorations.

Notes

For additional flavors, consider adding chocolate chips or flavored extracts to the batter.
