Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • For frosting:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth. Add red food coloring if desired.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy, then add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, heavy cream, and vanilla, mixing until fluffy.
  8. Once the cakes are cool, frost one layer, add the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
  9. Sprinkle heart-shaped decorations on top before serving.

Notes

For extra moisture, brush cake layers with simple syrup before frosting. You can make the cake gluten-free by swapping all-purpose flour for a gluten-free blend.
