A nostalgic Southern dish featuring crispy cornmeal-coated fried green tomatoes, perfect as an appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 green tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Begin by slicing the green tomatoes into half-inch thick rounds and sprinkling them with salt. Allow them to rest for about 10 minutes.
  2. Create a breading station with three bowls: one filled with all-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper, another with buttermilk, and a third with cornmeal.
  3. Take each tomato slice, first dipping it into the flour mixture, then dunking it into the buttermilk, and finally coating it with cornmeal.
  4. In a frying pan, heat oil over medium heat until it’s hot enough to create a sizzle.
  5. Carefully lay the breaded tomato slices into the hot oil in a single layer and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Once golden and crispy, remove the fried tomatoes and let them drain on a plate lined with paper towels. Serve hot.

Notes

For extra crunch, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or garlic powder to the cornmeal. You can bake them at 425°F (220°C) for a healthier version.
