Delightful beignet squares with a unique flavor profile from buttermilk and nutmeg, glazed to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Whisk the dry ingredients in a large bowl until combined.
  2. Combine the wet ingredients in another bowl until smooth.
  3. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thick on a floured surface.
  5. Cut the dough into squares using a knife or pizza cutter.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry beignet squares in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  9. Prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  10. Glaze the warm beignets and serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, glaze just before serving to keep the coating fresh and crispy.
