A classic homemade shepherd’s pie that combines savory meat, vibrant veggies, and creamy mashed potatoes for a heartwarming meal.

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground meat over medium heat. Once browned, drain excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onions, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are soft.
  4. Stir in the peas, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Let this simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Transfer the savory meat mixture to a baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Spread the creamy mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture.
  7. Optional: Sprinkle cheese over the mashed potatoes.
  8. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Shepherd’s pie pairs well with a simple green salad or roasted vegetables. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for a month.
