A comforting and nostalgic dish that combines creamy cheese and perfectly cooked elbow macaroni, topped with golden breadcrumbs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Breadcrumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside in a large bowl.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes until it bubbles slightly.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring it blends smoothly with the roux. Cook until it thickens, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
  5. Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, ensuring every piece is coated.
  6. Pour the mixture into a baking dish. Sprinkle breadcrumbs for a crispy top. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.

Notes

For extra crunch, try adding seasoned breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips before baking.
