A delightful Red Velvet Cake that beautifully balances moistness with a subtle hint of cocoa flavor, topped with rich cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder until well combined.
  3. Combine the vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and buttermilk. Mix until everything is well incorporated.
  4. Beat in the eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until the mixture is smooth and vibrant.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Frost with cream cheese frosting once cooled.

Notes

For extra moistness, consider adding 1/4 cup of applesauce into the wet ingredients.
