Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper for easy removal of the bars later.
  2. Combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Mix the egg, vanilla extract, and milk in a separate bowl until smooth.
  5. Combine the wet ingredients into the flour mixture until just combined.
  6. Press half of the dough evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 15 minutes until just lightly golden.
  7. Prepare the strawberries by tossing them with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar in a bowl.
  8. Layer the sugared strawberries evenly over the baked crust.
  9. Crumble the remaining dough over the strawberries.
  10. Bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  11. Cool slightly and whisk together the powdered sugar and milk to make a glaze. Drizzle it over the bars just before serving.
