A rich and indulgent chocolate sheet cake that’s perfect for gatherings, topped with a silky chocolate frosting and optional crunchy pecans.

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1/3 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk until well-blended.
  3. Create the chocolate mixture by boiling the unsalted butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan, then pour it over the flour mixture.
  4. Mix the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract in another bowl.
  5. Combine the egg mixture into the chocolate batter, mixing until silky.
  6. Bake the batter in the prepared pan for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the frosting by melting butter, milk, and cocoa powder in the saucepan, then whisking in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Frost the warm cake with the frosting.
  9. Sprinkle chopped pecans on top if desired, then let cool before slicing.

Notes

For a fudgier texture, decrease baking time slightly. You can also substitute whole wheat flour or make buttermilk from regular milk and vinegar.
