A moist, chocolatey cake topped with rich fudgy frosting, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt; stir well.
  3. Make the cocoa mixture by bringing butter and water to a boil, then stir in cocoa powder.
  4. Pour the cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until fully combined.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract; mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Prepare the frosting by boiling butter, cocoa powder, and milk, then stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.
  8. Frost the warm cake with the prepared frosting generously.
  9. Allow to cool completely before cutting and serving.

Notes

Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh berries for an extra treat. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
